Casablanca outline

SETTING:

  • The movie takes place in Casablanca, Morocco and was during the 1940's (WWII).
INTRO:

  • They introduce the main character which is Rick Blaine.
  • Rick own's a popcular cafe which a lot of people go to.
  • Two German couriers are murdered carrying official documents.
  • Ugarte shows up at Ricks club with letters of transit which he wants to sell.
  • Ugarte gets chased, and they finally arrest him after a struggle.
  • Now, Rick has the letters of transit.
STARTING TO HEAT UP:

  • Ilsa Lund shows up with her husband now which is Victor Laszlo (which escaped from a Nazi concentration camp) to Victor's cafe.
  • His ex lover and her husband needs the letters to leave for America.
  • The German authority see's to it that Victor does not succeed with leaving for America.
  • Victor meets with Rick for the letters, but Rick does not give it to him and tells him to ask his wife for the reason why he isn't.
  • Victor gets everyone involved with a song, and sang over the Germans, which was a success.
  • Due to this, the club gets shut down.
Ilsa DID WHAT?
  • She confronts Rick for the letters, and when he refuses she threatens him with a gun.
  • This is when they get emotional, and she tells him that her love for him was not a lie.
  • She also explains to him why she left him waiting to leave for Casablanca. She was going to leave with him because she thought her husband was dead, but she didn't leave with Rick because she had just found out that Victor was still alive, so the right thing to do was to go back to her husband.
DOWN HILL FROM HERE:
  • Rick tells Ilsa that he will give her the papers, and he will go with her so that they could be together.
  • Victor shows up, so Ilsa is hiding upstairs while Victor and Rick have a chat.
  • Victor informs Rick that he knows about him and Ilsa and what they had, also he says to give the papers in order for Ilsa's safety.
  • Police arrest Victor, but Rick convinces Renault to let him go.
  • Rick then tells Renault that himself and Ilsa are going to America together (lying).
  • Then Rick tells him to call someone but Renault is actually calling Major Strasser.
THE END:
  • As Victor shows up to the scene, Renault tries to arrest him but Rick points a gun at him.
  • Ilsa's confused, and Rick tells her that he is not going with her on the plane, and if she stays it is not safe for her. She is now convinced and goes on the plane with Victor.
  • Major shows up, and Rick shots him to his death.
  • Major's men shows up right after Major and finds him dead. Renault sticks up for Rick, and doesn't tell them he killed him.
  • At the end, Rick and Renault are walking (buddy-buddy).

We were talking at the end of the class about him letting them go on the plane, and some people said he was stupid for doing it. I don't think he was stupid at all, i think he did the right thing. Victor was in a tight situation he was going to be locked up for escaping the concentration camp, so we was more likely to end up in jail if he didn't get on that plane. Also, Victors wife was Rick's ex lover, which makes it the right thing to do because it is his wife. So, i think Rick handled that situation in a very good manner, and what he did was right all the way.

My topic 9 study concept

ROLE OF WOMEN DURING WWII:

  •  Some worked while the war was going on, and when it was time for the soldiers to come back, they lost their job and went back to taking care of the house.
  • Other women either took care of the kids, or was nurses in the war.
C/E OF ATOMIC BOMB:

  • United States bombed Japan under any circumstances (twice).
  • This caused death to millions of people.
  • Also, the U.S. hoped to end the war, but it didn't worked out as planned.
US FOREIGN POLICY BEFORE/DURING/AFTER THE WAR:

  • Before the U.S. was isolationist.
  • During, US basically joined the war in the middle, we didn't want to get involved until the US got attacked.
  • After the war, the US got involved in foreign affairs, and joined the United Nations.
EFFECTS OF THE WAR ON EUROPE:

  • There was an Economic change (a bad change).
  • Many, many casualties.
  • Imperialism was put to an end.
EFFECT OF PEARL HARBOR:

  • Immediate U.S. declaration of war against Japan.
  • Any person that was Japanese or Japanese decent were sent to relocation camps, isolated.

  • Cannot sell weapons to countries at war. - Embargo
  • US battle ships could not be armed.
  • Americans could on travel on ships to countries at war.
PURPOSE OF PROPAGANDA?:

  • Propaganda was deceitful. It would get people to believe in things that aren't true.
  • For example, it was used to make Hitler seem like he's running things smoothly, and what he is doing is for the sake of their lives.
  • People who saw propaganda around would believe it, and they would get all "pumped up" about it.

Holocaust survivors, bless them

The video I watched of a man named George Gottlieb was really emotional. But first of all, he said the solider let him find his mom for 20 minutes. There were soliders out there who felt bad, and did let them slide or bend the rules. But also, he said when he found his mother she was bald, and looked very bad. He was hurt when he saw her like that and he broke down on camera. It's really sad to know the survivors didn't reunite with their families and it makes me feel blessed to be born in my time and not have me or any of my parents go through the holocaust. It made me feel really bad watching it because you would see it in him after all this time he is still hurt, and he can still cry about it and tell that story.
Erna Anolik was another survivor. This was a women. She said when she arrived to the camps they shaved her head, and they got them undressed and gave her a dress with no underwear to wear under. This makes me think this was an easier way for the soldiers to rape these women. Also she says she volunteered to take coffee to the other camps for a chance to see her parents, but of course she never did. This is really sad that these women had to cope with this and live under these conditions. It makes me sad inside because i am a woman and i certainly wouldn't like these conditions at all if i was born during that time. Like i said, i'm very grateful that i was born after the Holocaust because i really don't think my chances of living were high. Also, i feel happy that there are survivors out there and it's good to know that not everyone died.

Show & Tell

This is a vintage gas mask. This item was used back in the WWII. This item was very important because it basically helped the soldiers or anyone who put this on live. This was used when toxic was floating through the air or even for the explosions. It helped people breathe when they couldn't because of various reasons. One was because in war the other side would through toxic gas, and if you breathed the air of the gas you would die. Mostly they would use this mask during warfare. Also, With the development of heavy bombers it was feared amongst the people that poison gas bombs would be used on civilian populations at anytime so people would have these handy just in case. They used to carry this gas box during war in either a box or a bag.
To inform you more specifically about the gases one of them were mustard gas, which was used to kill many people in the concentration camps using the poisonous gas. Another gas Carbon Monoxide which was a toughy because it could travel airborne, was invisible, and had no color so it was a surprise attack which the gas masks once again come in handy.
