War, by: Edwin Starr
"Was has caused unrest within the younger generation."
I think this quote means several things. It could be how the younger boys who turn a certain age had to go to war. Many never came back from war which messed up the younger generation. Also, i think it could mean all of the children and even teenagers having to live through war and not feeling safe at all. War didn't create that feeling just to the children, but also everyone else. The song "war" paints a very vivd picture that it is an anti-war song because he's basically stating that we don't need to be at war risking peoples lives out there. Also, this is a good classic song. There's another quote, "Made him disabled bitter and mean." This means the men who came back from war were ALL messed up. Some were disabled, mean because the war made them that way. They went through a lot, and seen a lot, so you really think they would come back home from the war normal?

MLK & Malcolm X
MLK & Malcolm differ in many ways, but are also similar. They both speak really good, and know how to start basically a revolution and convincing people easily. Also, they were both Civil Rights activists and wanted the same thing for African Americans. But, they went about it in two different ways. MLK, the man who was a pacifist, the man who said, "if someone punches you in the face, hug them." He wanted to handle the situation in a more non-violence way. But, Malcolm on the other hand was the total opposite of peace. He basically wanted to do whatever he wants to get the job done, even if that meant there had to be violence involved. I think MlK made a bigger impact in history. He achieved peace in a respectful manner, and did it the right way. That goes with the statement "violence doesn't solve anything."

Topic 11, concept guide
MLK & CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE:
- They would bring in Martin Luther King to come in and speak for the Montgomery Bus Boycott which lasted 381 days, unconstitutional. He organized for none of the black to EVER step foot on a bus anywhere, and it actually worked. MLK got arrested, but took it to Supreme court, and make it unconstitutional. Blacks now could sit in any seat on the bus, and did not have to give up their seat to anyone.
- Like we talked about in class, if all of us students sit on the beach and it's like the whole school, the faculty cannot do anything about it, they cannot move us, or suspend all of us. This leads into the situation of MLK. He told them, if someone punches you in the face, hug them. Kill them with kindness. Also, so if all the blacks didn't get on the bus, it made a scene.
PLESSY VS. FERGUSON, BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION:
- Supreme Court law with separate but equal. Blacks and whites were concerned.
- Brown: unconstitutional by 1954. It struck down Plessy vs. Ferguson because separate wasn't being equal. It basically stated that all men are equal regardless of race.
CIVIL RIGHTS GOALS:
- People began to be concerned.
- Freedom Rides, is where the black would drive to the deep south, and violate Jim Crow laws. The busses they rode on were often bombed, and sometimes white college students would join them.
- Also, Malcolm Little, which changed his name to Malcolm X due to the whole slavery passing down the last name from it's white owner. He's the "by any means necessary guy."
EISENHOWER'S ROLE IN LITTLE ROCK:
- In Little rock, Arkansas there was a school that was racially segregated and did not allow black students to enter. So the school decided to create a blockade for the Nine black students to not enter the school. So Eisenhower sent troops to protect the nine students as they walked into the school. While the nine students, there were angry mobs behind them screaming and yelling at them because they did not believe in this connecting of two races.
RIGHTS OF ACCUSED:
- Gideon vs. Wainwright, 6th amendment: accused criminal has a right to a lawyer.
- Escobedo vs. Illinois, Criminal suspects have the right to counsel during police interrogations, like they don't have to say a word without their lawyer there.
- Miranda vs. Arizona, If your not told you can have rights, his confession was not used in court because they did not tell him this.
BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION:
- Color ignites a movement.
- Oliver Brown sues school board, on behalf of his 8 year old daughter because she shouldn't be going to a school only for blacks, they should be equal.
- It basically stated that blacks and whites can go to a school and they wont be denied because of their race. Having separate schools for blacks and whites wasn't "equal" like the pressy vs. ferguson.
CHAVEZ & UNITED FARM WORKERS:
- Cesar Chavez, becomes a cultural icon for Chicanos, UFW.
- Organized Delano Grape Strike.
- Anit-Immigration while at UFW.
FHA & ADA:
- Federal Housing Administration, US government agency that insured loans made by banks and other private lenders for home building and home buying.
- Improve housing standards and conditions
- Provide and adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans.
- Stabilize the mortgage market.
- Americans with Disabilities Act, a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
PURPOSE OF FILIBUSTERS:
- It was used to stop the other side from speaking, so that the Civil rights leg. wasn't passed.
- The speaker would talk a whole lot, and end up getting a great applause.
SIT IN'S & OTHER PROTESTS:
- There were Lunch Counter sit in's where the blacks would sit in a place that only served white people and would just sit there until they were arrested (that's kind of power of the mob also). Usually when they were arrested, they were bailed out, and they would come back to the sit in's to participate again, and also get thrown in jail again.
- La Raza, was in the southwest, Chicano's (mexican americans) were fighting for equality.

Survey
RACE: HS GRAD: COLLEGE GRAD:
W mom yes, dad no no
H yes yes
W yes yes
H yes no
H yes no
W yes yes
AA yes yes
A yes no
H yes yes
A yes yes
H yes yes
H mom yes, dad no no
H yes mom only
W yes yes
Well, giving that i surveyed mostly Hispanics, i still think that White's have more of an opportunity to do things. I think if i surveyed more White's there would be a large amount that completed High school and College but, my results give me that Hispanics have more of an opportunity. But, i really feel if i would have continued this survey, White's would have more parents graduating because i believe they have more of a chance due to their race.

Meritocracy
I do believe in the idea that if someone works hard they could achieve the American Dream. In the video, the group of kids that were considered superior did perform the tasks that they were given better than the one's that were considered inferior, vice versa. I think the kids who were superior expected better of them selfs which made them live up to their image they were given. The one's who were inferior thought that they were already low, so why try? That has to do with psychological things, and with what your labeled. But, if the inferior kids try harder and didn't just give up because there was a "name" put on them, they would have just as good as the superior kids. People can achieve the American dream by working hard. It's like if you grow up poor, you think you not going to make something out of yourself so you just quit, and be average, or you don't think you can do it because your living in "lower class." But if you start out rich, and grow up like that, you would want money and wont stop till you get it. Just because there are labels placed on us, doesn't mean we have to live up to it.

Impact of tv
Television, what can I say about you? I watch you all the time, before I go to sleep and even when I wake up. Since televisions were made, a few people had them, but when it continued to get worldwide everyone had one. For example, in my house, there is a television in EVERY single room. For movie stars, there is TV's everywhere and even in their bathrooms. Also, there are TV's in cars now. Tv's advanced over the years, and it was a GIANT impact. It's an everyday thing.
TV before was just one or two shows, and they didn't broadcast all day, only certain hours of the day. Now, TV's broadcast all the time, day and night. It changed a lot. Watching TV can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. There's movies out there that show bad behavior which people try to imitate. Also, a big thing that teenagers watch is reality TV shows. I do watch these, and they show a lot of bad behaviors. I'm not one to imitate them, but some teenagers try to be like them, and try to do the things they do. These shows shouldn't show the kind of behaviors but they do and thats how they get money because more and more people watch. But as these shows progress, the violence rates go up. Have you ever thought that TV leads to violence. Well, in my opinion it most certainly does. For instance, teenagers see someone on th show smoking, and "looking cool," so they follow them and do the same thing in real life. TV could influence a lot on teenage behavior, and it's one problem we need to solve. Try censoring your shows MTV.
