War, by: Edwin Starr
"Was has caused unrest within the younger generation."
I think this quote means several things. It could be how the younger boys who turn a certain age had to go to war. Many never came back from war which messed up the younger generation. Also, i think it could mean all of the children and even teenagers having to live through war and not feeling safe at all. War didn't create that feeling just to the children, but also everyone else. The song "war" paints a very vivd picture that it is an anti-war song because he's basically stating that we don't need to be at war risking peoples lives out there. Also, this is a good classic song. There's another quote, "Made him disabled bitter and mean." This means the men who came back from war were ALL messed up. Some were disabled, mean because the war made them that way. They went through a lot, and seen a lot, so you really think they would come back home from the war normal?

MLK & Malcolm X
MLK & Malcolm differ in many ways, but are also similar. They both speak really good, and know how to start basically a revolution and convincing people easily. Also, they were both Civil Rights activists and wanted the same thing for African Americans. But, they went about it in two different ways. MLK, the man who was a pacifist, the man who said, "if someone punches you in the face, hug them." He wanted to handle the situation in a more non-violence way. But, Malcolm on the other hand was the total opposite of peace. He basically wanted to do whatever he wants to get the job done, even if that meant there had to be violence involved. I think MlK made a bigger impact in history. He achieved peace in a respectful manner, and did it the right way. That goes with the statement "violence doesn't solve anything."

Topic 11, concept guide
MLK & CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE:
- They would bring in Martin Luther King to come in and speak for the Montgomery Bus Boycott which lasted 381 days, unconstitutional. He organized for none of the black to EVER step foot on a bus anywhere, and it actually worked. MLK got arrested, but took it to Supreme court, and make it unconstitutional. Blacks now could sit in any seat on the bus, and did not have to give up their seat to anyone.
- Like we talked about in class, if all of us students sit on the beach and it's like the whole school, the faculty cannot do anything about it, they cannot move us, or suspend all of us. This leads into the situation of MLK. He told them, if someone punches you in the face, hug them. Kill them with kindness. Also, so if all the blacks didn't get on the bus, it made a scene.
PLESSY VS. FERGUSON, BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION:
- Supreme Court law with separate but equal. Blacks and whites were concerned.
- Brown: unconstitutional by 1954. It struck down Plessy vs. Ferguson because separate wasn't being equal. It basically stated that all men are equal regardless of race.
CIVIL RIGHTS GOALS:
- People began to be concerned.
- Freedom Rides, is where the black would drive to the deep south, and violate Jim Crow laws. The busses they rode on were often bombed, and sometimes white college students would join them.
- Also, Malcolm Little, which changed his name to Malcolm X due to the whole slavery passing down the last name from it's white owner. He's the "by any means necessary guy."
EISENHOWER'S ROLE IN LITTLE ROCK:
- In Little rock, Arkansas there was a school that was racially segregated and did not allow black students to enter. So the school decided to create a blockade for the Nine black students to not enter the school. So Eisenhower sent troops to protect the nine students as they walked into the school. While the nine students, there were angry mobs behind them screaming and yelling at them because they did not believe in this connecting of two races.
RIGHTS OF ACCUSED:
- Gideon vs. Wainwright, 6th amendment: accused criminal has a right to a lawyer.
- Escobedo vs. Illinois, Criminal suspects have the right to counsel during police interrogations, like they don't have to say a word without their lawyer there.
- Miranda vs. Arizona, If your not told you can have rights, his confession was not used in court because they did not tell him this.
BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION:
- Color ignites a movement.
- Oliver Brown sues school board, on behalf of his 8 year old daughter because she shouldn't be going to a school only for blacks, they should be equal.
- It basically stated that blacks and whites can go to a school and they wont be denied because of their race. Having separate schools for blacks and whites wasn't "equal" like the pressy vs. ferguson.
CHAVEZ & UNITED FARM WORKERS:
- Cesar Chavez, becomes a cultural icon for Chicanos, UFW.
- Organized Delano Grape Strike.
- Anit-Immigration while at UFW.
FHA & ADA:
- Federal Housing Administration, US government agency that insured loans made by banks and other private lenders for home building and home buying.
- Improve housing standards and conditions
- Provide and adequate home financing system through insurance of mortgage loans.
- Stabilize the mortgage market.
- Americans with Disabilities Act, a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability.
PURPOSE OF FILIBUSTERS:
- It was used to stop the other side from speaking, so that the Civil rights leg. wasn't passed.
- The speaker would talk a whole lot, and end up getting a great applause.
SIT IN'S & OTHER PROTESTS:
- There were Lunch Counter sit in's where the blacks would sit in a place that only served white people and would just sit there until they were arrested (that's kind of power of the mob also). Usually when they were arrested, they were bailed out, and they would come back to the sit in's to participate again, and also get thrown in jail again.
- La Raza, was in the southwest, Chicano's (mexican americans) were fighting for equality.

Meritocracy
I do believe in the idea that if someone works hard they could achieve the American Dream. In the video, the group of kids that were considered superior did perform the tasks that they were given better than the one's that were considered inferior, vice versa. I think the kids who were superior expected better of them selfs which made them live up to their image they were given. The one's who were inferior thought that they were already low, so why try? That has to do with psychological things, and with what your labeled. But, if the inferior kids try harder and didn't just give up because there was a "name" put on them, they would have just as good as the superior kids. People can achieve the American dream by working hard. It's like if you grow up poor, you think you not going to make something out of yourself so you just quit, and be average, or you don't think you can do it because your living in "lower class." But if you start out rich, and grow up like that, you would want money and wont stop till you get it. Just because there are labels placed on us, doesn't mean we have to live up to it.

Impact of tv
Television, what can I say about you? I watch you all the time, before I go to sleep and even when I wake up. Since televisions were made, a few people had them, but when it continued to get worldwide everyone had one. For example, in my house, there is a television in EVERY single room. For movie stars, there is TV's everywhere and even in their bathrooms. Also, there are TV's in cars now. Tv's advanced over the years, and it was a GIANT impact. It's an everyday thing.
TV before was just one or two shows, and they didn't broadcast all day, only certain hours of the day. Now, TV's broadcast all the time, day and night. It changed a lot. Watching TV can be a good thing, but also a bad thing. There's movies out there that show bad behavior which people try to imitate. Also, a big thing that teenagers watch is reality TV shows. I do watch these, and they show a lot of bad behaviors. I'm not one to imitate them, but some teenagers try to be like them, and try to do the things they do. These shows shouldn't show the kind of behaviors but they do and thats how they get money because more and more people watch. But as these shows progress, the violence rates go up. Have you ever thought that TV leads to violence. Well, in my opinion it most certainly does. For instance, teenagers see someone on th show smoking, and "looking cool," so they follow them and do the same thing in real life. TV could influence a lot on teenage behavior, and it's one problem we need to solve. Try censoring your shows MTV.

Sexism was a biggy back then.
This picture demonstrates sexism as you can see. Since it's way too small to read it says "There are 4 reasons why more women cook on Magic Chef." They had to put the word WOMEN in there, why not families, or men? Also, in the picture it shows the mother in the kitchen cooking. Also, it's even worse because it looks like the daughter is watching her, and it looks like she's probably teaching her, that Magic Chef is better. You don't see a young son in the picture do you? Back then, most of all the add that ad to do with cooking, i garentee you will find a women in the picture, you wont find any men because women were expected to stay home and cook. This is how men viewed the ladies in the house, and what they expected from them to do house work, and be in the kitchen all the time. Men were very sexist back then, as you can see in this picture.

Norman Rockwell's art, my story
On a gloomy monday, Johnny, Jacob, Jessica, their mother Monica, and their dog sprinkles wait un patiently because todays the day that Dad comes home from the war. So, they all are helping mom with cleaning the house, and cooking, and the kids set up the table. They make the place spotless for welcoming Dad back. After all that is done, time flew by. It was 6:30. The time he was suppose to arrive but, he was a no show.. They were hoping he would come back today because Christmas was in two days!! After all, what is Christmas without dad? All the presents were under the tree, there was many for Dad not bought, but handmade from the children. As they are all upstairs in Moms room, the wait by the window with a Christmas reef on it showing Christmas spirit. 7:30 comes around and he's still not there. The kids wonder why he isn't, and the mother wonders if something happened. All of a sudden a yellow cab pulls into their driveway, and everyone jumps up with HUGE smiles on their faces waiting to see if Dad's getting out of that yellow shabby cab. The man steps out, and it's their father. The mother and kids, smile at him and wave through the window because they are so happy to see him! Even the dog is drooling with joy. The family runs down stairs, swings open the door, almost blowing it off the hinges. The kids run to him, Jessica gets there first jumping on her dad hugging him, then the boys come after. Last but not least, he puts the kids down after hugging them for a while and grabs his wife gently, lays her back and romantically kisses her and says "I've been waiting to do that for a long time." She then smiles, and a tear drops from her eye down to her rosy cheeks. When the kids notice this, they run up to Dad and they all hug him creating a group hug. Monica then tells him, "Come inside, I made your favorite dinner, and i even made desert for you." The kids run inside, and following them is Monica and her husband with his arm around her. Daddy's home, everything alright now, no more worrying.

Casablanca outline
SETTING:
- The movie takes place in Casablanca, Morocco and was during the 1940's (WWII).
- They introduce the main character which is Rick Blaine.
- Rick own's a popcular cafe which a lot of people go to.
- Two German couriers are murdered carrying official documents.
- Ugarte shows up at Ricks club with letters of transit which he wants to sell.
- Ugarte gets chased, and they finally arrest him after a struggle.
- Now, Rick has the letters of transit.
- Ilsa Lund shows up with her husband now which is Victor Laszlo (which escaped from a Nazi concentration camp) to Victor's cafe.
- His ex lover and her husband needs the letters to leave for America.
- The German authority see's to it that Victor does not succeed with leaving for America.
- Victor meets with Rick for the letters, but Rick does not give it to him and tells him to ask his wife for the reason why he isn't.
- Victor gets everyone involved with a song, and sang over the Germans, which was a success.
- Due to this, the club gets shut down.
Ilsa DID WHAT?
- She confronts Rick for the letters, and when he refuses she threatens him with a gun.
- This is when they get emotional, and she tells him that her love for him was not a lie.
- She also explains to him why she left him waiting to leave for Casablanca. She was going to leave with him because she thought her husband was dead, but she didn't leave with Rick because she had just found out that Victor was still alive, so the right thing to do was to go back to her husband.
DOWN HILL FROM HERE:
- Rick tells Ilsa that he will give her the papers, and he will go with her so that they could be together.
- Victor shows up, so Ilsa is hiding upstairs while Victor and Rick have a chat.
- Victor informs Rick that he knows about him and Ilsa and what they had, also he says to give the papers in order for Ilsa's safety.
- Police arrest Victor, but Rick convinces Renault to let him go.
- Rick then tells Renault that himself and Ilsa are going to America together (lying).
- Then Rick tells him to call someone but Renault is actually calling Major Strasser.
THE END:
- As Victor shows up to the scene, Renault tries to arrest him but Rick points a gun at him.
- Ilsa's confused, and Rick tells her that he is not going with her on the plane, and if she stays it is not safe for her. She is now convinced and goes on the plane with Victor.
- Major shows up, and Rick shots him to his death.
- Major's men shows up right after Major and finds him dead. Renault sticks up for Rick, and doesn't tell them he killed him.
- At the end, Rick and Renault are walking (buddy-buddy).
We were talking at the end of the class about him letting them go on the plane, and some people said he was stupid for doing it. I don't think he was stupid at all, i think he did the right thing. Victor was in a tight situation he was going to be locked up for escaping the concentration camp, so we was more likely to end up in jail if he didn't get on that plane. Also, Victors wife was Rick's ex lover, which makes it the right thing to do because it is his wife. So, i think Rick handled that situation in a very good manner, and what he did was right all the way.

My topic 9 study concept
ROLE OF WOMEN DURING WWII:
- Some worked while the war was going on, and when it was time for the soldiers to come back, they lost their job and went back to taking care of the house.
- Other women either took care of the kids, or was nurses in the war.
- United States bombed Japan under any circumstances (twice).
- This caused death to millions of people.
- Also, the U.S. hoped to end the war, but it didn't worked out as planned.
- Before the U.S. was isolationist.
- During, US basically joined the war in the middle, we didn't want to get involved until the US got attacked.
- After the war, the US got involved in foreign affairs, and joined the United Nations.
- There was an Economic change (a bad change).
- Many, many casualties.
- Imperialism was put to an end.
- it caused another dropping of the Atomic bomb.

- Many of them were released many years later & got money as an apology if they were still alive.
- 1935-1937
- Cannot sell weapons to countries at war. - Embargo
- US battle ships could not be armed.
- Americans could on travel on ships to countries at war.
- Propaganda was deceitful. It would get people to believe in things that aren't true.
- For example, it was used to make Hitler seem like he's running things smoothly, and what he is doing is for the sake of their lives.
- People who saw propaganda around would believe it, and they would get all "pumped up" about it.
RATIONING:
- American's were asked to conserve on everything for the sake of our soldiers in war.
- Families would ration food, gas and even clothing to help out.

Holocaust survivors, bless them
The video I watched of a man named George Gottlieb was really emotional. But first of all, he said the solider let him find his mom for 20 minutes. There were soliders out there who felt bad, and did let them slide or bend the rules. But also, he said when he found his mother she was bald, and looked very bad. He was hurt when he saw her like that and he broke down on camera. It's really sad to know the survivors didn't reunite with their families and it makes me feel blessed to be born in my time and not have me or any of my parents go through the holocaust. It made me feel really bad watching it because you would see it in him after all this time he is still hurt, and he can still cry about it and tell that story.
Erna Anolik was another survivor. This was a women. She said when she arrived to the camps they shaved her head, and they got them undressed and gave her a dress with no underwear to wear under. This makes me think this was an easier way for the soldiers to rape these women. Also she says she volunteered to take coffee to the other camps for a chance to see her parents, but of course she never did. This is really sad that these women had to cope with this and live under these conditions. It makes me sad inside because i am a woman and i certainly wouldn't like these conditions at all if i was born during that time. Like i said, i'm very grateful that i was born after the Holocaust because i really don't think my chances of living were high. Also, i feel happy that there are survivors out there and it's good to know that not everyone died.

Show & Tell
This is a vintage gas mask. This item was used back in the WWII. This item was very important because it basically helped the soldiers or anyone who put this on live. This was used when toxic was floating through the air or even for the explosions. It helped people breathe when they couldn't because of various reasons. One was because in war the other side would through toxic gas, and if you breathed the air of the gas you would die. Mostly they would use this mask during warfare. Also, With the development of heavy bombers it was feared amongst the people that poison gas bombs would be used on civilian populations at anytime so people would have these handy just in case. They used to carry this gas box during war in either a box or a bag.
To inform you more specifically about the gases one of them were mustard gas, which was used to kill many people in the concentration camps using the poisonous gas. Another gas Carbon Monoxide which was a toughy because it could travel airborne, was invisible, and had no color so it was a surprise attack which the gas masks once again come in handy.

Stop censoring our History books!!
Dear Dr.Rhinehart,
I don't think we should be censoring anything out of our history books. I think we should have the full knowledge of what goes on, and what went on before. I don't think it is fair to not teach us everything and every detail. We read about the Rape of Nanking in our class today, which was not in the text books. Yeah, what i read was really shocking and really straight forward, but i think we can handle it. We are old enough to not get anything censored out of our history books. I read about how the Japanese killed millions and killed them in ways you wont imagine. Honestly, it was disturbing but i thought i should know these things that happened because they ARE part of history still no matter how bad they are. This is what really happened, why keep us from that? This is what we call Genocide and it perfectly explains the meaning. Also, in Sudan genocide took place. They killed many civilians and made them suffer. They also used starvation as a weapon. Many more places like this were attacked by genocide. If Genocide is one of our vocabulary words, and your not going to tell us the details behind the word and what really took place, how do you expect us to learn and understand that word. Therefore, with all due respect i think us students earned the right to not have our history books censored because if you do that, we really aren't learning about all of our history at all are we?
Sincerely, Marissa Balance

GEN-O-CIDE - countries still at risk today
In these countries a lot of Genocide is happening. What we read in class that happened long ago, it was horrible things about how the japanese killed millions of people and doing it in a way that will make them suffer. But is it happening today? A lot of people think it's not just because it's not happening in the United States, but they are wrong. It's happening in many other countries still till this day. Do you think we, as in the United States should intervene? Yes, i think we should. We have the power to do something and maybe we could help to where it doesn't occur in those countries any longer. But i also say no, because the simple fact that it will cause problems with a lot of countries and make them well hold a grudge against us and to tell you the truth we don't really like the drama. Yeah, i don't have a straight forward answer because it's to hard to choose because either way theres a consequence. If we don't, many people suffer and many of them die which i feel bad about and think we should stop it. But, if we do, maybe the other countries will come at us and start a "war." Although we can take care of ourselves, but the question is how long till we can't anymore? But, now that i think about it, i lean more to the yes we should intervene because many people out there are suffering and i think we should be willing to take the chance and stop it since we are so "big and powerful" because nobody can hurt us. Right?

Cinderella man, outline
INTRODUCTION:
Boxer, James J. Braddock was later nicknamed Cinderella man after his come back.
Wife, Mae Braddock always worrying when there will be a time when he will get hurt badly.
They had three children together. She also had a sister that would visit.
James's best friend was Mike Wilson, that died during the depression.
~Mainly, Braddock is living during the period of the Great Depression, and he is struggling to support his family after his career goes down hill.
FINANCIAL PROBLEMS:
- Jimmy lost everything he had due to the stock market crash, including a large house. Now, they live in like a small shack.
- He searches for jobs but it's very hard because many other people are searching for jobs too. So, they all go to a gate, and have to wait to get "picked" to work only that day. Tomorrow is the same process.
- His whole family is struggling not having enough food to eat and money to pay the bills.
STILL NOT SO WELL:
- Jimmy breaks his hand fighting, so this means it will be harder for him to get a job. If they see he has a cast on they wont pick him to work because they don't want to be slowed down. So he covers it up with shoe polish so it blends in.
- Then, he ends up asking for relief money to get the kids back, & to pay the light bill.
COME BACK:
- He has a couple of rough fights, but his coach is willing to pull through so he sells almost everything he has (this is what Mae stumbles upon as she knocks on his door) and wants to get him back in the game.
- People do not think he can last in any fight because they say he's "an old man."
- But somehow, he ends up determined to win the fights, and he changes and this is when his come back starts to be in affect.
BRADDOCK VS.?:
- He gets one big fight, and when he wins that fight, many other fights follow after.
- His wife is scared he might get hurt. Yeah, she supports him, but she doesn't want anything to happen to him to where he's gone in her and her kids lives.
- These fights were something big because he was getting paid and started to get back on track paying all of his bills.
MAX BAER (BE VERY AFRAID):
- Braddock moves on to become the heavyweight champ, but the only one left to fight was the other "champ" Max Baer.
- People warm him not to go through with the fight due to the fact that he killed two men in the rink. But, he goes through with it anyway.
- His wife Mae is scared because it has come to the time where his life is really threatened and he might die she says.
- Baer insults Braddock and his wife at a restaurant before the fight, and Mae throws a drink on him.
- The fight comes around, and it's a very tough fights. But ofcourse, Braddock wins and becomes the new heavy weight champ, with millions of screaming fans supporting him and calling him an inspiration.
FAIRY TALE:
- Braddock pays his relief money back to the helping people.
- He pays all his bills off because he can afford it now.
- Braddock moves on to do great things.
- He buys a big house for the family and now the family is happy.
- They live well for the rest of their lives.
Everything worked out for them, and although the hard times they went through it was okay because they still have each other and they are one big happy family. - Great movie by the way. :)
